This 50,000 SF expansion added six new gates, designed and constructed with future expansion in mind, to the A Concourse, while modernizing the 12 existing gates on the A & B Concourses. This project included new terrazzo flooring and renovated restrooms throughout both the new and existing areas of Concourse A & B. It also featured improved circulation and increased natural light, enhancing the overall passenger experience, as well as a new power infrastructure to support the expanded facilities.

The project’s primary architect Brad Sucher, Senior Vice President with Gresham Smith, offered additional examples about how these design choices are ultimately in service of the passenger experience. “A couple of things I really like about this facility…you’ve got all this natural light pouring in, and there’s a clear line of sight all the way back into the existing [structure], including baggage claim and the exit lane. And as you get closer to this glass, one thing you may notice is…we actually mitigated the glare through electrochromic glazing. This ensures the passenger doesn’t get all that glare into their eyes, but it still provides that open view out to the airfield. As a plane goes by right now, you almost feel like you can reach out and touch [it].

“What’s also going to be unique for the passengers here is they’re going to have a lot of variety of seating. And with that, you’re going to be able to support the various types of passengers that use this facility.”

This project required a collaborative approach when it came to planning the execution of the work. Maintaining operations is always a top priority when it comes to working in an active airport. To ensure gates became operational as quickly as possible, the team expedited the preconstruction phase, taking care to include a detailed plan that would guarantee all existing jet bridges stayed in service during the peak tourism season.

Hospital construction was completed in June, and the facility welcomed its first patient shortly after on July 1, 2025. The medical office building was finished on Friday, August 15. Both buildings were completed by the JE Dunn | McFarland Construction joint venture team.

Designed with the community in mind, the nearly 200,000-square-foot, five-floor, state-of-the-art hospital features a 24/7 emergency room, dozens of inpatient beds, labor and delivery floor, operating and procedure rooms, imaging, lab and pharmacy. The building also features the latest technology, including secure virtual nursing capabilities and in-room dining service, as well as a healing garden and art installations from local artists.

The 66,690-square-foot medical office building includes 61 exam rooms and two x-ray rooms for a number of specialties, including OB-GYN, heart and vascular, general surgery and pulmonary care. Additional specialties include Atrium Health Musculoskeletal Institute orthopedic services and Atrium Health Sanger Heart and Vascular Institute cardiovascular services.

A custom terrazzo floor showcases a bronze outline of a life-size plane, while displays celebrate North Carolina’s aviation legacy, highlighted by an immersive “First in Flight” light and sound wall. A life-sized DC-9-82 T-Tail aircraft is embedded in the floor near Gate A31, adding to the visual experience.

The exterior sunshade lighting system boasts 100 lights, ranging from 4 to 30 feet in height, capable of creating 17 million color combinations. This impressive project also achieved two Green Globe Certifications under the Green Building Initiative (GBI), underscoring its commitment to sustainability.

Beds for Kids will use the money to purchase an additional 18’ box truck to aid in delivering high-quality beds and furniture to low-income households in Mecklenburg and Cabarrus Counties with at least one child under 18. They are on pace to deliver to 1,250 families in 2024.

JE Dunn employees nominated and voted on a variety of organizations across the country to select the final 10 recipients. Beginning in February, a new organization will be surprised each month, with 10 total awards delivered in 2024.

The AP2 buildout is a strikingly bright space full of vibrant colors, textures, and patterns to inspire creativity. Dozens of open meeting spaces and focus rooms are situated throughout the floor for employees to work together on a task or bounce ideas off one another. Natural elements like living moss walls and potted plants punctuate the lively décor. A large kitchenette/hub provides plentiful common area seating.

In Phase One, JE Dunn completed an 18,000 SF renovation and addition to the building’s existing lobby and storefront. Interior demolition brought the space back to shell condition. JE Dunn built it to a new and improved standard to activate street-level engagement for the approximately 25,000 people who walk by the building daily, installing new curtainwall, a refreshed storefront facing Tryon Street, expanding the ground floor lobby and retail, and reimagining the exterior plaza space.

JE Dunn has already built out multiple spec suites throughout the building. Current and future phases include further build-out of interior suites. In addition, JE Dunn is currently working through preconstruction for the Monarch Food Hall, which will house 12 food hall stations for multiple food and beverage offerings within One Independence Center.

The facility houses 295,000 SF of net usable space, including 8,000 SF of lab and pathology space and 60,000 SF of procedure space including radiology, dialysis, and surgery/operating rooms. The facility also includes support and specialty clinics. The project includes a stand-alone Central Energy Plant.

Using lean processes, we delivered this project on a fast-track approach that eliminated waste. Our team facilitated pull plan sessions for all major milestones and updated the master project schedule accordingly. Through early BIM coordination, we prefabricated all overhead plumbing, leaving only a single bucket of scrap piping at the end of the project. We saved time and money by starting the structure prior to release of 100% Construction Documents.
