Delivering complex projects on time, on budget, and to exacting quality standards takes more than experience, it requires mastery of tools, data, and process. Consistently delivering exceptional results at scale is even more difficult. At JE Dunn Construction, that pursuit of certainty has evolved into a proven track record of success. Collaborating with partners like Trimble has allowed us to integrate technology and execution to achieve measurable results on our most demanding projects.

This is not a story of adopting new technology, it’s a story of transforming how it’s used through partnership and communication. While many contractors have access to Trimble’s industry-leading layout and modeling tools, JE Dunn’s advantage lies in the right people using the right tools through a connected, standardized workflow that turns technology into a strategic advantage. By integrating Trimble hardware and software across every phase of our self-perform operations, we’re redefining what it means to build with precision, efficiency, and sustainability.

A shared vision for connected construction

Trimble is known globally for its innovations in geospatial positioning, machine control, robotic total stations, laser scanning, and modeling software like Tekla Structures in conjunction with Trimble Connect, a platform that connects everything together. Their solutions bridge the gap between design and field execution, translating digital intent into physical accuracy.

As a top ten general contractor in the U.S., we’ve helped shape how connected construction technology is deployed on all of our active jobsites. Trimble’s tools provide the digital backbone; JE Dunn’s self-perform teams provide discipline, feedback, and field validation that bring that vision to life. That collaboration extends companywide – from federal projects to healthcare and data centers, every JE Dunn team applies consistent, data-informed practices that improve predictability and drive measurable gains project after project.

Turning tools into an advantage

JE Dunn believes that when technology and the delivery of self-performed scopes are optimized together, they drive operational excellence. When we control the work that directly impacts schedule, labor, and quality, we deliver certainty of results. To achieve that, JE Dunn standardized all building layout and self-perform modeling, creating a unified digital workflow from design to delivery. By embedding these workflows across all self-perform scopes nationwide, JE Dunn ensures every project team operates from the same playbook of proven, data-driven practices.

Tekla Structures serves as the data and modeling foundation, allowing for accurate and detailed modeling of concrete, steel, formwork, and embedded components.

Trimble Connect provides a real-time data environment that keeps everyone building from the same source of truth — allowing VDC teams to push layout data to the field and field teams to feed as-built data back in for continuous alignment.

FieldLink and Robotic Total Stations bring digital precision into the field for layout and as-built verification.

SiteVision enables augmented-reality visualization on site, while Trimble X7 and X9 laser scanners capture exact as-built conditions for quality assurance.

That end-to-end ecosystem has delivered extraordinary results. Across JE Dunn projects, rework associated with concrete layout dropped from $2.1 million in 2022 to $500,000 in 2024, with zero layout-related rework year-to-date in 2025. On one hyperscale data center, integrated modeling and layout workflows helped quadruple turnover speed, proving that precision and pace can coexist.

Driving labor efficiency and workforce empowerment

Labor is construction’s most valuable and most constrained resource. This technology allows JE Dunn to deploy labor more efficiently while elevating the work experience for field professionals.

On a recent data center project, model-to-machine workflows and automated layout reduced manpower for a key excavation task from four laborers to one — a 75% efficiency gain. That freed skilled workers for higher-value tasks while maintaining accuracy and safety.

Equally important, these tools are building confidence and capability among our people. Through tailored training programs, JE Dunn has empowered field engineers and craft professionals to fully leverage digital tools that reinforce accuracy, accountability, and pride in craftsmanship.

The result is a workforce that not only embraces technology but uses it to redefine how construction gets done.

Reducing waste through measured performance

Efficiency in the field isn’t just good for business, it’s good for the planet. The precision enabled by JE Dunn’s connected workflows has dramatically reduced waste and resource consumption on JE Dunn projects.

On one large-scale concrete program, our technology-enabled delivery had astounding results. Two separate large scale concretes pours had verified placement results that used 14% and 32% lower concrete amounts than estimated. The total was 724 fewer cubic yards of concrete hauled and placed. That means we also saved 72 gallons of fuel. As the primary carbon factors on the job, these reductions produced a 27% reduction in carbon emissions, the environmental equivalent of reforesting 648 acres or powering 86 homes for a year. Fewer trucks on the road, less material hauled to site, and fewer corrections made after the fact all contribute to meaningful environmental impact.

Every yard of concrete saved, every hour of labor optimized, and every error prevented strengthens both project performance and environmental responsibility.

Standardization and continuous improvement

JE Dunn’s success with technology-integrated delivery workflows lies not in isolated wins but in standardization. From model creation to machine control, JE Dunn’s proven process is an enterprise-wide standard. Laser scanning with the X9 is fully integrated into Trimble Connect for as-built verification. Model-based excavation planning and machine control are redefining efficiency in the field — cutting durations by as much as 50% and reducing manpower needs dramatically. Meanwhile, embedded coordination through robotic layout tools is bringing that same precision to the structure, virtually eliminating rework across steel embeds, formwork ties, and anchor bolts.

Perhaps most importantly, the partnership is iterative. JE Dunn’s field feedback continues to inform Trimble’s product development roadmap, helping them prioritize enhancements that deliver real value in the field. In turn, Trimble’s advancements allow our teams to push performance further on every new project. It’s a cycle of shared innovation and one that benefits the entire industry.

Raising the bar for construction

The partnership between JE Dunn and Trimble demonstrates what’s possible when two organizations align around a combined vision of precision and progress. While the technology is widely available, the difference lies in how it’s used.

By standardizing workflows, empowering people, and relentlessly measuring results across every jobsite, JE Dunn is setting a new benchmark for what self-perform construction can achieve. Together with Trimble, we’re proving that innovation isn’t about having the newest tools but mastering them to deliver certainty, efficiency, and sustainability on every project.

When technology and craftsmanship unite, the result is more than construction, it’s confidence built into every square inch.

[343
post-46857","blog","type-blog","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","type-of-content_tax-self-perform-content
["GET
